When centrifugal pump is working, the pump shaft is rotary but the shell is motionless, if the annular space between them does not seal or is sealed badly, the air outside will go into low-pressure area of impeller center, the flow and efficiency will decrease. In general, we can use the mechanical seal or packing seal to realize the seal between shaft and shell.
