Vacuum degasser is the equipment used in oil & drilling processing to remove the gases in the drilling fluids. If the gases that generates in the down hole drilling do not remove from the drilling mud, it may cause bubbles, and reduce the performance of other solids control equipment, and also may cause well kick. So to avoid potential problem in drilling, a degasser is a must for the solids control system. While for some shallow well, such as coalbed methane ( CBM ) exploration, or horizontal directional drilling, degasser is not a must.

Vacuum degassers are used to remove the small entrained gas bubbles left in the mud by the mud/gas separator. These units are positioned downstream from mud/gas separators, gumbo removal equipment ( if utilized ), shale shakers and mud conditioners ( if utilized ), while hydrocyclones and centrifuges follow in the arrangement.

For small amount of entrained gas in a drilling fluids, the degasser can play a major role of removing small bubbles that a liquid film has enveloped and entrapped. In order for it to be released and break out the air and gas such as methane, H2S and CO2 from the mud to the surface, the drilling fluids must pass degassing technique and it can be accomplished by the equipment called degasser which is also a major part of a mud system.

Vacuum type is the most common form of degasser. It can be horizontal, vertical or round vessel. A vacuum action is created to pull in the gas cut mud. When the liquid enters the mud tank, it will flow and be distributed to a layer of internal baffle plates designed for the mud to flow in thin laminar film and is exposed to a vacuum that forces the gas to escape and break out of the mud. The vacuum pump moves the escaping gas from the vessel discharging it to the rig’s flare or environmental control system.
