A typical oilfield solids control system is consisted of five stages, including mud tank, shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, drilling mud decanter centrifuge, mud agitator, centrifugal pump and compartmentalized tank technologies. The shale shaker is vital to the solids control system and is considered the first stage of solids control equipment, it is used to separate the big solids with diameter above 75μm. Located directly downstream from the shale shaker will likely be hydrocyclones assembly, desander and desiliter, sometimes desander & desilter are combined as highly efficient drilling mud cleaner. Though still considered rare, centrifuge-enable solids control systems are becoming more popular, decanter centrifuge is the most popular one. By adding a drilling decanter centrifuge, the solids control system will achieve the highest level of cut available.
 

When air goes into the drilling fluids, vacuum degasser is used to separate the air. If no air is found in the mud, the degasser will work as a big agitator. All these equipment are mounted on the top of the mud tank. After separating the solids, the clean mud will be pumped into the borehole again.
