Drilling fluids performs essential functions during oil & gas well construction such as transporting cuttings to the surface, preventing well-control issues and wellbore stability, minimizing formation damage, cooling and lubricating the drilling rig and providing information about the wellbore. However, cuttings are obviously created during the drilling operations, and they will pose safety hazards and reduce drilling efficiency. That is the theoretical foundation that drilling fluids purification is based upon. Both the oilfield solids control system and related equipment are involved to conduct this operation.
1. The recommended installation order of unweighted mud solids control system is: drilling fluids shale shaker, mud desander, desilter, and oilfield drilling decanter centrifuge, by which the undesirable solids will be removed in descending sequence. The selection of drilling fluids solids control equipment for different levels should depend on mud density, solids' type and content, rheological property and rated capacity of each oilfield solids control equipment. Other than decanter centrifuge, the capacity of the other solids control equipment should not be less than 1.25 times of maximum capacity of drilling mud centrifugal pumps.
2. Closed drilling fluids solids control system: the closed solids control system is an integrated unit all of whose solids control equipment related are installed in the tank to conduct a closed recycling treatment of drilling mud. The closed solids control system is consisted of two oilfield shale shakers with fine mesh, a desander and a normal shale shaker; decanter centrifuges installed downstream from two drilling mud cleaners and a set of mud tanks having pores inter-communicated with each other, which contain three main tanks, two storage tanks and a spare tank. This solids control system is characteristic of the following advantages: large capacity for all kinds of unweighted mud, capabilty of maintaining the property of drilling mud, effectiveness in solids-removal and zero-emission of drilling mud avoiding environmental pollution.
3. Oilfield decanter centrifuge can be replaced by micro-hydrocyclones or assisted with a micro-hydrocyclone before it to make the operation more efficient and avoid massive loss of mud simultaneously.
