The drilling fluid desander, also known as a hydrocyclone desander or mud desander, is an essential part of modern drilling solids control systems. Installed downstream of the shale shaker and degasser and upstream of the desilter, it efficiently removes harmful sand particles (47–74 microns) from the drilling fluid, maintaining mud quality and improving drilling efficiency.
KOSUN’s desander operates on the centrifugal sedimentation principle using a hydrocyclone as the core unit.
After treatment by the shale shaker, drilling fluid is pressurized (0.2–0.4 MPa) and fed tangentially into the cyclone, generating a high-speed vortex. Heavier solids move outward and are discharged from the underflow, while the cleaned fluid exits through the overflow and returns to the circulation system.
